Great to have Bonesick back in my inbox, Katie! And wrapped in a beautiful tale of persistence and releasing yourself from your own creative cage. This made me miss Foster so much (can you believe it's already been a year since Season 3?) โ I'm hoping to do the June cohort! ๐
Also, I finally broke down and bought Rick Rubin's book when I was in Austin last week visiting my husband on a gig. The book's mega-popularity made me distrustful at first, but I gotta say, it's hitting allllllll the right spots for me creatively. Even better โ it's a drop in, drop out kind of book. I don't feel any pressure to consume it at breakneck speed, but rather I pick it up when I'm feeling a bit deflated or need a spark of inspo. I hadn't yet encountered the quote you included, but man is it ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ.
Michael! No I CANNOT believe itโs been a year!! Even though Iโm moving this story along at a snailโs pace, Iโm still excited about the progress Iโve made since Foster S3. I hope you marvel at your own growth and progress too! ๐ For being a study of the melancholy, it certainly brings me SO much freaking joy! I would absolutely join you in the June Cohort if I wasnโt traveling here there and everywhere (Columbus, Des Moines, Denver, oh my!!) Maybe August ๐
Thank you for reading!! I accept my duty as a snail! And your anecdote really inspired me to pick up a copy of The Creative Act rather than request it from the library. I adore the idea of picking it up here and there when I need a hit ๐
Thank you!! And I think your upcoming anniversary is precisely the perfect time to take stock and celebrate your beautiful contribution to this cozy corner of internet!!
Absolutely in love with this! You have a special talent for describing smells and writing things that stick (even though I read it months ago, I often think about your piece reminiscing about local greasy spoons!) I really enjoyed picking up with these two following the gruesome aftermath.
Will, thank you! As you yourself can probably attest toโฆ writing like this is just such a blast. For this one I even researched what human death smells like over time. Neat! ๐
โLike opening a package of rancid beef left inside a hot, rusty carโ. Wow! What an image.
A nice read as I sit in the ferry terminal waiting room to take my son to school.
It was so cool to hear that the cohort shed some light on your surroundings. And Rick Rubin too. Loved that bookโand all the conversations I listened to around the time of its launch. Itโs such a helpful book.
Your fellow cohorts were the light you needed, much like the lantern the hermit carries. Sometimes the light isnโt a lantern at all, and sometimes weโre not really alone at all, like the hermit.
So glad to have you back.
Thank you for letting my imagination make this as gruesome, or not as gruesome as possible. It is the darkness and the gore I didnโt know I needed.
As always, cheering you on and I canโt wait to read more!
"...as gruesome or not as gruesome" ๐๐๐ Love it! I'm forever delighted to lead you into the dark (my hand ALWAYS outstretched of course). And yes, it's been a whole treasure chest of wisdom these last few weeks. Such is the creative life, am I right??

Thank you for the reminder to marvel and celebrate my own growth and progress. Unsurprisingly, I don't do this very often! ๐คฃ
Travel safely next month and I hope we join the same cohort later this summer!

That sounds like an interesting olfactory rabbit hole to dive into lol

Youโre another trusted pal thatโs recommended this book so itโs gotta be good ;) Iโm happy to entertain you during all that ferry madness!

Bethel thank you so much!! Youโre so right on, and now weโre all just repackaging those philosophies to make a buck, which I find fascinating!
